Sponsors are
not chosen for "what they know", but because they are
people who are willing to walk with others on this
journey of faith, and because they have an ability to
embody what it means to be a disciple.
Sponsors are traveling companions to the Inquirer going
through the RCIA process. Sponsors are friends,
companions, and guides along this journey. A sponsor
listens to his*her candidate*s faith and questions and
doubts; does not have to be any kind of authority of the
Catholic religion.
A sponsor does have to be a practicing Catholic and has
to have received the Initiation Sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist.
A sponsor comes to the weekly sessions and the special
rites with his/her candidate, encourages his/her
candidate and is willing to share his/her time and
faith.
Sponsors are the link through which candidates become
exposed to the various ways in which members of the
parish community already serve in some form of ministry.
As sponsors we do not come with a ready-made plan for
any candidate, but we listen with them as the plan of
God unfolds in *their* hearts and actions.
Shortly after starting each autumn, there is a special
informational and sharing meeting for sponsors to help
them start on their way with confidence and to discuss
and share experiences and answer questions.
